Required music courses, especially music lessons, must be started as early as possible, preferably in the freshman year. In order to major in Music, a student must audition, and be accepted into the department by a designated member of the faculty. Music majors complete a minimum of 120 credits to earn a bachelor’s degree: 49–51 credits of core courses, 49–51 elective credits, and a minimum of 41 credits in their major. The student's program must be approved in advance by the Department Chair.

A student may substitute a senior thesis or composition for MSC-400 Major Recital. A detailed proposal must be submitted to, and approved by, the Department Chair.

Music majors are required to participate in at least one of the following performing ensemble for 0 to 1 credit each semester. At least 6 MSP credits are necessary to fulfill degree requirements.

All music majors will be required to pass comprehensive examinations in music history and theory and examinations in ear training and in piano proficiency before the end of the final semester.
