Poverty, racism, corruption and civil war have plagued the African continent for centuries.  This course traces the history of slavery, colonialism, African nationalism and neo-colonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa, relating these experiences to its contemporary political situation.  It is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of independent African states.
