Special Education (M.Ed.)
The M.Ed. in Special Education will be offered as either an Accelerated Program or as a Two-Year program.
Accelerated Program:
The accelerated graduate program is designed for candidates graduating from Salve Regina University with an undergraduate degree in education (i.e., early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, and/or special education). The accelerated program is an expedited, full-time program. Candidates that choose this course of study will begin graduate classes in the fall of their senior year. At the conclusion of the graduate program, candidates will be prepared to begin their teaching careers with advanced knowledge in special education.
Two-Year Program:
The two-year graduate program is designed for candidates that are currently teaching and have certification in education. Candidates will complete their degree over a two-year time span so that current careers in the school setting may continue. Candidates seeking special education certification will be able to complete the required 6 credit internships in the candidate's current school setting with a special education teacher colleague acting as a clinical educator. This program is ideal for current teachers desiring a M.Ed. in special education while working full-time.
Candidates must choose a concentration that meets their professional goals. The program offers concentrations at 3 levels: early childhood, elementary, and secondary special education. Early Childhood Special Education focuses on students from birth to grade 2 including screening and assessment. Candidates also learn about the Itinerant Model Early Childhood Special Education and the role as the special educator as coach. The concentration in Elementary Special Education expands educators' knowledge of strategies for teaching literacy, including science of reading, and STEM for diverse learners. Those concentrating in Secondary Education Special Education will develop a deeper understanding of how to teach literacy to adolescents as well as the steps for transitioning and career planning.
Candidates must complete 10 courses totaling 30 credits to earn the M.Ed. All concentrations complete 8 courses (24 credits) plus 2 courses (6 credits) aligned to their concentration. Candidates seeking RI teacher certification in special education must also complete the 6 credit internship.
